Free Tips

Minimizing the variables and decisions you need to make on exam day lets you focus on smashing the exam itself! Here are a few tips to approach exam day:

Rest Pattern

Attempt to rest well in the lead up to the exam. If your sleep is restless this is quite normal, don’t panic!

Focus on your plan and know that disrupted sleep is not the end of the world. Once you get started in the exam your focus and gameplan will get you through.

Relax the night before the exam

Consider making a rule to not study the night before an exam, plan a relaxing activity instead. Impossible? My paid guide will show you how you can get to a point where you feel you can relax and not cram the night before the exam.

Alarm Set

Set and check your alarm so you don’t sleep in! Make sure you have the right time in AM/PM, your device is charged and your volume is high enough to wake you up!

Know Your body

Eat nutritious foods in the days before the exam, and avoid foods that you know will give you any digestive issues on exam day.

Gather Your required ID and Equipment

Compile your identification documents and any equipment allowed for the exam, such as calculators, pens, water bottle etc a few days before the exam.

Pack your Bags

Pack your identification and equipment into a convenient bag to carry to the exam. Do this the night before so you can simply take it with you when you leave for the exam.

Have a Travel Plan

Plan your travel to the exam location a few days before the exam.

Find any relevant public transport timetable and understand the walk to the exam location.

Check for any transport disruptions the night before and on the day of the exam.

Pick a transport option that gets you there early and ensure you have a few chances available if you miss the first train or bus.

It can also be a good idea to check out and familiarize yourself with the exam room or exam location a few days before the exam. Trying this can help with your mental plan or visualization of the exam day. It can be calming, as it removes one item of uncertainty.

Hydration and Caffeine

Hydrate well in the days before the exam. The last thing you want is a dehydration headache on the day!

Also consider any caffeine intake carefully. Overuse of caffeine in the week before the exam can throw your body out of balance on exam day.

Toilet Break

Go to the bathroom before you leave for the exam or at the exam location, if you are familiar with the facilities available.

Minimize Distractions at the Exam Site

Minimize chatter before the exam, especially if you know it does not help you.

Avoid the chronic “panickers” madly asking questions of those around them before the exam. They are a distraction and it is too late to help them anyway. Take a short walk away if necessary. Gently tell them you need to focus if they bother you.

Visualize the plan and the reward

Close your eyes and visualize the plan, talk yourself through the plan if needed. For the exact plan to use, check out the Fast Exam Success Guide available for sale at the bottom of this page.

Remind yourself of the reward you will give yourself when your exam(s) are over. Exam season will pass and life will go on.

Positive Self-Talk

Stay positive, if you have prepared according to plan you are in a fantastic spot. You are about to "win the game". You can do this, so remind yourself that you can. Feel the nerves? That's actually excitement, because in a few short hours you're done with this exam. Another one down, another game won.

Finally, Breathe

Remember to pause and take deep breaths before and during the exam. It helps with any residual stress and it can be beneficial to use as a reset between questions in the exam.

If you utilize the above tips going into exam day, you have removed a lot of uncertainty and taken control of the first part: Getting to the Exam!

It may seem obvious or trivial, but this is one of the foundations to smashing the exam, and is a much better alternative to arriving flustered, late and confused.
